NEW MEMBERS! Introduce yourselves here! / New member in Sweden
« Last post by Jonas Hasselhuhn on August 06, 2021, 03:14:47 AM »
I introduce myself here, a new member with some roots in Scotland on my mother's side. Hence my last name is Hasselhuhn, which originates from Germany and came to Sweden via Latvia during the same time as my Scottish ancestor came to Sweden. But that's a whole other story.

My connection to Scotland and Thomson.
My direct ancestor (12 generations) Colonel Tomas Thomson of Vrana.
During the Thirty Years' War in Europe, the young Tomas Thomson served in the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf's cavalry. Colonel and regimental commander. Natural Swedish nobleman 1642. Attached is his coat of arms from the Swedish House of Nobility. There are great similarities with Thomson's arms.

He settled in Värmland Sweden and started a family. Married to Catharina Mauritzdotter Murray, they had 15 children.
Almost all the sons followed their father's military career and most fought and fell in various war.

I lack knowledge of where in Scotland he was born. I only have names for his parents and grandparents.

  • Father Henrik Thomson. cavalry captain in English service. Married to some Duwall.

  • Grandfather William Thomson married Anna Stuart.

Noble Thomson family is extinct in the latter half of the 18th century.

I hope to come across more information about my ancestors in Scotland someday. I understand that it is difficult. On the other hand, it is easier to take part in Scotland's history and culture.
Therefore, I am happy to get in touch with all of you who share this desire to share and learn from each other.

Thom(p)son Genealogy / Re: Russell County, Virginia Thompsons?
« Last post by kthomp on December 25, 2020, 12:43:20 PM »
I know this is a very old thread but it seems to be the closest I can find to my Thompson line.
My Thompsons, came to Illinois from Wayne Co, Kentucky (George Washington Thompson 1837-1905). They settled in Montgomery and Menard Counties, north of Springfield. The given names of George and William seemed to be very common in the family. I don't know of any remaining family in the area having moved toward Chicago and West to Missouri in the mid 20th century. George's father, Archibald was from VA where he married his first wife in 1814. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hello Thompson members!
I am Kathy Bolander-Hunt, and my 4th great grandfather was John Thompson. He was born 1772 in Parish of Donagheady, County Tyrone, Ireland, died 1843 in Muskingum County, Ohio. His spouse was Mary Moffit, born 1766 County Down, Ireland and died 1866 Edgar County, IL. John Thompson was a weaver by trade. He immigrated to Philadelphia in 1801, resided in Chester County until 1815 at which time he migrated to Muskingum County, Ohio. I do not know at this time, who his parent's were, or if he had any siblings or not. I  know they were not Catholic, and most likely the Methodist Church.Would be interested in any suggestion's. Hope to find some relatives here.

Thank you!
Kathy

NEW MEMBERS! Introduce yourselves here! / Greetings from Illinois
« Last post by clthompson on October 20, 2018, 11:48:58 AM »
Greetings from Illinois. I was at the Scottish Games in Chesterfield, Missouri last month and had a ball. My Thompson's migrated from Pennsylvania to Illinois in 1860.  Samuel Thompson and his wife Hannah Hamilton lived in Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1830.

My great-great grandfather, John Thompson, served in the Civil War. He was with the Illinois 106th Infantry and fought at the siege of Vicksburg.

I am not sure about other Thompson's, but my branch is a competitive bunch and like to fight.

Games & Festivals / 2018 Rhode Island Scottish Festival
« Last post by Stirling Thompson on June 16, 2018, 04:02:56 PM »
On Saturday, June 9th, Dottie and I spent our 45th wedding anniversary running the clan tent at the 20th annual Rhode Island Scottish Festival at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Richmond, RI.

It was a beautiful day not too hot and no humidity. I missed these games last year because of my grandson's graduation from high school so it was good to be back. They changed things up a bit this year because they moved the athletics to the parade grounds in the center of the clan village so we actually got to see some of the action.

There were only about 22 clans in attendance this year and half a dozen bands. We were fairly steady with visitors to the tent and everyone seemed to have a good time. I even got to meet one of our viking cousins, a Thomsen.
Next up for me is the Glasgow Lands Festival in North Hampton, MA at Look Park on Saturday July 21, 2018. If you're in the neighborhood stop in and say hello.

There are plenty more pics in the album here: https://postimg.cc/gallery/2ijrp6uz0/
